wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
I was just wondering. I live in South Dakota and there a plenty of wild rabbits running around. Do you think it would be safe to trap or shoot a rabbit (during hunting season of coarse), freeze it (to kill the bugs or mights), thaw and then feed to a boa? The thing I would be concerned about is pestacides or poisen the rabbit may of eaten. This would be done in the country away from the city so I would think this would lessen the chances of either of those. But...it would still make me nervous. Any thoughts?

Re: wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
Yes, but you still take a chance of it having parasites unless you have a special deep freezing unit, even then some parasites can suspend themselves to re emerge under correct conditions.
Even the mice you buy might have parasites so I would not worry too much.

Re: wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
I'd have to say it probably isn't a good idea.
unless your 100% certain of what they are exposed to prior to capture/kill.
for human consumption we have an additional layer of defense by cooking them, which kills what freezing may not.

Re: wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
you have a point. It just crossed my mind the other day. The thing that worries me is pesticides and so forth that farmers might put on there fields that the rabbits might be injesting. Don't know if I would take the chance.

Re: wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
If I am not mistaken, someone here once mentioned that they shot wild/feral pigs and froze them to feed to a VERY large burm..............I will try to dig up the thread............
so here it is:
Daisy finally ate her pig. Thank God!
that is the specific post that mentioned it. Cant really see that much difference between wild rabbits and wild pigs.

Re: wild, frozen rabbits. bad idea?
I see you live in Sioux Falls, if you want cheap rabbits theirs an Exotic animal sale in Allen, Nebr. twice a year you can pick up 4-h and champion blood line rabbits for about 2 dollars a peice. Won't save you money unless you buy in bolk, for the drive I mean. It's about an hour and a half for Sioux Falls. Just thought I'd let you know.
