Cockatiel sudden death.

So I'm very down today, as my 6 year old very first Cockatiel, Popcorn, died today.

But I have a question as to how he may have died. I found him dead, with his wings spread out, hanging from the side of the cage, with his mouth and one foot on the bars, it looks as if he died suddenly while climbing up the cage. Only other details I can give that would help is that there was a very loud thunderstorm earlier...could he have had a heart attack?

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. =(

It is very easy for birds to be startled, so a heart attack is possible.

Re: Cockatiel sudden death.

Doubt the thunderstorm did it... probably something medical on the inside...you need to check with a vet...

Re: Cockatiel sudden death.

I'm so sorry you lost your buddy! I imagine it could have been a heart attack/related to the loud noise??? Seems possible to me anyway, not a bird expert though.

I'm so sorry, Erik. We had two tiels when I was growing up, and they died suddenly, too. We never knew why, but I suspected living in the same house with my parents had something to do with it.

Re: Cockatiel sudden death.

So just to throw this out there... While I know nothing about birds but I have heard that if you cook on Teflon pans and heat them up to hot or burn them they give off fumes that are toxic to birds and will kill them... Sorry for your loss

Re: Cockatiel sudden death.

You probably didn't do a single thing wrong. Birds don't die from heart attacks from storms...wouldn't be too many left in the world ! Birds are among the most notorious for just "dropping dead " one day. Their symptoms are extremely hard to detect. One thing I do is an annual physical for my birds every year. The avian vet take s a mouth smear, nosrtil smear, poop smear. Tests for common diseases . My parrots poop was " low in normal bacteria " last year so I supplement with yogurt. My particular amazon breed is known to be low in vitamin D so I supplement with "sunshine factor" in addition to a south american light ( even though they don't produce vitamin D like humans from the sun exposure. ) Sorry you lost the guy. I love birds very very much and have never been with out one in my entire life ! I logged in special for you Erik frogmom

Re: Cockatiel sudden death.

Cockatiels are usually pretty hardy but as frogmom said most avian ailments are very hard to detect and can come on suddenly. I used to breed them and had a male that lived to 13 years old and he survived 4 mates all died suddenly and no true cause was ever found as to why they died and he did not.

As for the storm some birds can die from stress alone but evolution has proved thunder its self is not usually a factor as they survive it in the wild all the time.
But if there was other stressors at the time it could have been a combination of factors.

The only true way to tell the cause is by a necropsy and even then it may forever be a mystery.

My condolences on your loss.

Very sorry to hear of the death of your dear pet Popcorn.

At least you know it was very quick, and that you and he have had some great time together!
